The Institute of Control Systems (ICS) is a state-owned research and development centre, founded in 1977 in Katowice, Poland.

Since the beginning of its operation the Institute has focused on applied research and development in the areas of IT and automation systems, and on implementing their results on the market.

In the 1980s ICS worked on the development of microcomputer systems and real-time IT systems. ICS staff developed and implemented for production Poland’s first microcomputer system MERA-60 and one of Poland’s first programmable industrial controllers MERA-80.

In the second half of 1980s the Institute was the main contractor of the Central Research and Development Programme “Support Systems for Engineering and Scientific Experiment”.
In the 1990s, which was the period of dynamic changes in Poland’s economy, the Institute’s operation was verified by market-economy conditions. ICS took the challenge and, maintaining its R&D status, adapted commercial rules to the majority of its work.

In 1997 the Institute bought a facility in the neighbouring city of Chorzow. The building was then modernized and adapted the needs of the company, finally becoming its headquarters in 1999. This way the Institute gained very good conditions to carry out its mission and to develop as an organization.
