Medical Systems Unit carries out research and development work in the range of specialized medical systems, in the following areas:
 Objective examination of hearing
Balance system examination
The work began in early 1990s as a result of the Institute’s co-operation with the Medical University of Warsaw – the Clinic of Otolaryngology and the Institute of the Physiology and Pathology of Hearing. The co-operation resulted in the development and implementation for production of the following devices:
- Kuba – a device for hearing screening examination of newborns with the use of the Auditory Brainstem Responses method. In 1996 a new option was added to the device – otoacoustic emission registration Kuba OTO,
- gonioscop (optokinetic stimulator) – 1997,
- Marta – a diagnostic device for registering auditory evoked potential - 1999,
- Kuba mikro – a device for hearing screening examination of newborns and infants - 2004
The specialists of Medical Systems Unit and the co-operating institutions are Poland’s unique, interdisciplinary team competent in the range of:
- Analyzing the current technological state of the art and developing new medical devices and systems for the examination of hearing and balance.
- Designing medical devices and systems (hardware and software) with the use of the latest elements and IT technologies.
- Making models and prototypes of medical devices and systems.
- Preparing testing plans and organizing tests of prototypes of medical devices and systems according to the EU directives.
- Organizing manufacture and service of medical devices and systems.
High quality of our work has been recognized by the following awards:
- Ministerial team awards from the Minister of Health in 1992, 1994 and 1998
- The „Złoty Eskulap” award at the SALMED’96 International Fair
- Golden medal at the 51st World Exhibition on Innovation, Research & New Technologies „Eureka 2002” – Brussels
- Golden medals at International Inventions Fair „Concours Lepine 2004” and „Concours Lepine 2005” – Paris
- a number of diplomas and awards from the Minister of Science and Information Society Technologies.
Selected projects developed recently:
- System of balance examination with the use of electronystagmography and optonystagmography – a specific targeted project by the Minister of Science, 2001-2003
- System for posturographic tests – a specific targeted project by the Minister of Science, 2001-2003
- Development of a miniature device for hearing screening examination of newborns and infants with the use of objective test methods – a specific targeted project by the Minister of Science, 2003-2004
- Development of a screening audiometer – a specific targeted project by the Minister of Science, 2005-2006
- Optimizing the parameters of acoustic nerve electronic stimulation with the use of a cochlear implant – the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, 2002
- Testing the possibilities of simultaneous stimulation of one ear – the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, 2003
